Prof Abbas Bhuiya has a PhD in Demography from the Australian National University and has in various capacities, spent most of his career at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B). He spent the initial years in the 1980’s with the Matlab Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) of ICDDR,B, one of the oldest surveillance sites in the developing world. He established the Chakaria HDSS and Chakaria field site of ICDDR,B in the 90’s and still directs the Chakaria HDSS. He is known for his research in the area of social determinants of health, health disparity, evaluation and monitoring, primary healthcare services, and socioeconomic development programmes for the poor, community participation, healthcare financing, and the likes. He was the head of the Social and Behavioural Sciences Unit and the founding head of Poverty and Health Program of ICDDR,B. He serves in the Board of the Commission on Health Research for Development (COHRED) and is the current chair of the COHRED Board. He is a member of the editorial Board of Demography, a member of the editorial borad of the International Journal of Population Research, and a section editor of Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition. He is a professor at the James P Grant School of Public Health, BRAC University, Dhaka. He is the founding chairperson of the Scientific Group on Population and Poverty of the Asian Population Association. He represents ICDDR,B in INDEPTH. He has been the Deputy Executive Director of ICDDR,B since July 2011.
